The events that unfolded during Easter 1916 led to the birth of modern Ireland and continue to inspire almost a century later. In MISE ÉIRE that history can be seen precisely as it happened, captured in period newsreel film. The period covered in this documentary, 1896-1918, was one of the most momentous in Irish history. Included is powerful film footage of giant figures in the history of the independence movement, including Michael Collins, Patrick Pearse, Éamon de Valera, James Connolly and Thomas Clarke. l MISE ÉIRE was produced in 1959 and became an instant classic as witnessed by the quotes above from period reviews. It is the first film ever made in the Irish language and this DVD release contains English subtitles. The musical score was composed by the great Sean O' Riada and it too has become a classic. l Bonus features include a film in which veterans of the conflict give first-hand accounts of what transpired and film footage documenting the making of the film and its 1960 theatrical premiere. The second DVD contains SAOIRSE?, which documents the tumultuous period 1919 to 1922 and follows on from where MISE ÉIRE leaves off, covering the War of Independence, the Truce and Treaty, the establishment of the Free State and, most tragically, the outbreak of the Civil War. As in MISE ÉIRE, there is much powerful film footage of famous freedom fighters and of the dramatic events like the burning of the Customs House in 1921. Included is a 20 page booklet with compelling photos and notes.
