An injured U.S. soldier, Sgt. Will Montgomery (3:10 to Yuma Star- Ben Foster), is paired up with an off-kilter, by-the-book vet, Capt. Tony Stone (Golden Globe nominee Woody Harrelson), to notify families of fallen soldiers -- a job that gets thorny when Montgomery breaks the rules and starts a relationship with a woman he's recently notified (two time Oscar Nominee Samantha Morton.). Featuring a brilliant directorial debut by Oren Moverman and tour-de-force performances from Foster, Harrelson and Morton, THE MESSENGER is a surprising, moving and ultimately human portrait of grief, friendship and love.

Award-winning screenwriter Oren Moverman (I'M NOT THERE, JESUS' SON) makes his directorial debut with THE MESSENGER, features Ben Foster, in his first leading role, as Will Montgomery, a war hero with 3 months left in the service. After recovering from his physical injuries, Will has returned to a life that doesn't resemble what he left behind: his ex-girlfriend (Jena Malone) is now engaged, his home life consists of heavy drinking and heavy metal and he has been assigned to Casualty Notification Office, under the command of the wry and tough supervisor Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson). The two men form a unique and unlikely friendship, while Will finds himself surprisingly falling for a young widow (Samantha Morton) whom he's been assigned to notify of her husband's death in action.
Featuring tour-de-force performances from Foster, Harrelson and Morton, THE MESSENGER shows the challenges of moving past the anger, fear and rage war has on veterans and their families, and the universal need for connections. Moverman brings us into the inner life of these seemingly tough, cocky heroes to delicately reveal the fragile characters hidden underneath.
