A rare occasion to hear the 1950's John Lewis in a trio format!! John Lewis' complete 1959 album Improvised Meditations and Excursions, in which the pianist abandoned his typical MJQ lineup to play relaxed trio pieces. Further tracks featuring John Lewis' piano as the primary instrument in trio and duet formats (which was a rarity for him) have been added as a bonus. Improvised Meditations and Excursions was one of John Lewis' very few excursions into the trio format during the first three decades of his career. During this time he concentrated his efforts mainly on the Modern Jazz Quartet and on isolated albums with larger formations.
