MAMA, OH, MAMA -- THE BEST OF SEASON FIVE!

In the world of prime-time television, success often begets success by way of the spin-off. The Carol Burnett Show lasted eleven seasons on CBS, thanks in part to the recurring comedy sketches that attracted a large, loyal viewership. “The Family” remained a favorite because fans related to the Harpers’ constant squabbling about mundane stuff. As the irascible Mama Harper, Vicki Lawrence was wondrously transformed into a full-tilt senior citizen and it wasn’t a matter of if, but when, she would get her own TV series. MAMA’S FAMILY debuted in 1983 on NBC, lasting two seasons before going into syndication for another four years.

In THE BEST OF SEASON FIVE, The Harper Family refutes the old expression “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” when Bubba gets a video camera and his heavily-edited footage winds up on Raytown public-access cable TV. Despite her crankiness, Thelma Harper is a good person. She does the right thing after the bank ATM spits out $20 bills like a slot machine. When Iola is cast out of her own home, Thelma invites her to stay with the Harpers. Once there, Iola takes over the whole house, covering furniture with gaudy slipcovers and reorganizing Thelma’s kitchen. While she won’t admit it, Thelma loves and needs her screwball family. She’s willing to drop an expensive funeral plan on their behalf. A rare weekend alone puts her life in perspective. Companionship sure beats talking to lola’s goldfish, drinking beer, watching wrestling, or making noise with pots and pans to accompany an impromptu musical medley. Misery is having no one around to insult!

Includes 6 original, unedited episodes, hand-picked by Vicki Lawrence:

  • The Really Loud Family
  • Naomi’s New Position
  • Found Money
  • Mama’s Layaway Plan
